Sustainability & Regionality
Our sustainability measures – a combination of regionality, innovation, and tradition
For us, sustainability is much more than just a buzz word—we feel responsible towards nature, which has given us such a wonderful landscape. As a popular destination for national and international guests and as an economic enterprise, we consider it our duty and obligation to use our resources carefully. Only in this way, both the beauty and unspoilt nature of our region can be preserved. We tackle where mindful behaviour makes sense—and a real difference.
Hotel beds
Our hotel beds were produced by Nils Holger Moormann, a company based in Chiemgau, Bavaria, Germany. Moormann products are well-known for their innovative design and short transport distances during production. The entire production chain is limited to a radius of only 40 kilometres, whereas conventional beds often travel 10,000 to 20,000 kilometres. Our guest rooms are equipped with the «Siebenschläfer» (dormouse) model, made of birch wood and completely metal-free. Have a restful night's sleep. More information: www.moormann.de
Tables
We took over all the tables in the restaurant and hotel rooms from the previous owner as part of the overall package. You could really see their age and that they had been used by countless guests. Our neighbour, the famous Grümpelsepp, helped us with word and deeds in restoring these tables. Now, the refurbished tables welcome guests for many more years to come. Are you among them? Stools
In the restaurant and hotel rooms, you’ll notice the charming and comfortable «Trix» chairs made of beech and oak wood. Manufactured by the family-owned company «Schmidiger Möbelbau» in Bregenzerwald (Austria), they even won a design award—meritedly, we’d say. www.schmidinger-moebelbau.at
Illumination
Lamp «Lehni», a true Swiss design legend, provides the perfect lighting concept for our hotel rooms. Designed in 1976 and still manufactured in the traditional Zurich-based company, this lamp impresses with its timeless Swiss elegance. Lehni stands for sustainability and vitality: the designs are much sought-after on the second-hand market and, thanks to recyclable aluminium and professional repairs, can be brought back to life over and over again. Timeless design with responsibility is exactly our thing. Meet Lehni: www.lehni.ch
Textiles
Regionality is also an important factor. The decorative cushions in the restaurant were handmade. Martina Sardella from the drapery Stofflokal in Hergiswil NW won our hearts with the quality and lovable design of her products. You can buy her products at the «sin6 Boutique», among other places. Cuckoo clock
Affair of honour: every proper guesthouse needs a cuckoo clock. Our clock is called Hansruedi. It was designed by Søren Henrichsen and handmade in Geneva. Hansruedi, a wonderful blend of Scandinavian design and Swiss precision, delights our guests every full hour. Would you like to hear what Hansruedi sounds like? Just drop by and listen. www.sorenhenrichsen.com
Cleaning agents
Good hygiene is crucial for hotels and restaurants. Therefore, the consumption of cleaning and detergent products is quite high. It goes without saying that we opted for an ecological and sustainable solution and eventually found what we were looking for. The Steinfels company provides a range of cleaning products that perfectly aligns with our values. Clean affair, isn’t it? Learn more: www.steinfels-swiss.ch
Shop
Would you like to purchase a souvenir of your stay with us or are you looking for a thoughtful gift for your beloved ones? Ta-da! In our small shop, you will find handmade specialities and unique regional trouvailles. Supporting local small producers who are creative with passion, love, and high-quality standards is a given. You see, our sustainability measures are a combination of regionality, innovation, and tradition. Our goal: to promote a sustainable, regional economy.
Energy
In November 2020, we kicked out our old oil heating and replaced it with an energy-efficient thermoelectric heat pump—a crucial step for us and the environment. We were happy to take on the challenge of finding an environmentally friendly solution on rocky mountain ground. In addition, all the windows in the guest rooms were upgraded to the latest energy standards and the ceiling of our large drinks cellar was insulated. Another milestone is the photovoltaic system on our roof, which supplies us with energy; and by feeding surplus electricity into the regional grid, we make an important contribution to the region’s sustainable energy supply. We also installed environmentally friendly appliances and installations during the modernisation of the kitchen in 2020. Keyword: energy efficiency, if you know what we mean.
Surroundings
Right in front of our guesthouse, a unique biodiversity project is flourishing, which we launched together with ASTRA (Swiss Federal Roads Office) and the office «Impuls Thun». Our goal is to promote natural diversity around the Brünig mountain.
We preserved old brickwork that serves now as nesting sites for birds. In addition, we installed bat boxes and a lovingly designed bee hotel made by local craftsmen. In cooperation with the Haslital forest holding, we planted valuable bushes to provide food and shelter for various animals. After all, our region is not only our home, but also a habitat for countless plants and animals that depend on our support. With these projects, we want to preserve the balance between humans and nature—for today and for future generations. We are particularly pleased to see how nature appreciates our commitment: birds, insects, and reptiles quickly occupied the new habitats. It is a real joy to keep track of them.
Procurement
We live and breathe regionality, as it is a sustainable way of life and brings people together. We know all our suppliers personally and are in close contact with them. This ensures that we always source the best products from Swiss output. Our potatoes, for example, are supplied by our neighbour and grow directly below the guesthouse.
Even more sustainability?
Here you are.
Stories like these make us proud and motivate us to expand such collaborations. No detail is too small to be sustainable or regional: an artist from Meiringen made our key rings, for example. The flowers and plants around the house were planted by the Aebi Nursery in Meiringen or BliomäMeitli in Lungern. And we use refillable soap dispensers in the rooms and sanitary facilities to minimise waste.
These are all small but important things we can do. Buying regionally protects the environment and supports the people and businesses in the region. Every product that comes from our region has its own special story—and we’d like to share it.
